Norwich City executive director Zoe Webber says Carrow Road development planning is under way, but will take years to deliver.
The club have considered making improvements to their NR1 stadium for a significant amount of time, but face a number of barriers in their attempts to do so.
Webber discussed some of those barriers, and the project’s current status, saying: “We started off with safe standing becoming available, and we were like ‘okay, let’s look at safe standing’.
“It is no secret that the City Stand needs development. The changing room areas aren’t really fit for purpose – it works but it’s probably too small. We could do with more capacity.
“What we’ve been doing is piecing together all of the needs, but what’s happened is that just triggers more conversation.
“It is like: ‘Well if we’re doing safe standing, where are we doing safe standing? Does the away section have safe standing? Does the away section move? There are so many pieces around it.”
Steps have already been made to make City’s hopes a reality, however, with architects consulted. “We’ve been working with architects,” Webber continued. “We’ve been working with Legends, who are a company that specialise in stadium development effectively. They’ve done the project at Liverpool.
“Obviously the key thing for us is being able to do a project where we don’t displace season ticket holders, which is very difficult when you’ve got so many.
“What we’re really looking at at the moment is the art of the possible. What we don’t want to do is do something in the short term that then is prohibitive to a longer-term plan.
“Whilst I completely get people aren’t really seeing anything at the moment, we’re looking at what it would look like if it was done. Let’s now unpick that and try and take it on a journey.
“At the moment construction costs are just ridiculous, so it is cost prohibitive at the moment – there’s no way of achieving it. But hopefully that isn’t going to be forever.
“So it’s actually what the short-term things we can do are. Ultimately [we want] safe standing, better supporter facilities, [a better] hospitality landscape, and have more capacity.
“It will take a lot of years to execute, but you’ve got to start.”
