David Wagner does not view a pep talk from Norwich City chiefs Delia Smith and Michael Wynn Jones as a dreaded vote of confidence.

Wagner revealed the soon-to-be joint minority shareholders rang him to offer support ahead of this weekend’s trip to Cardiff City.

The under-fire Norwich head coach has lost eight league games in 11, and is now having to bat away growing questions on his own Carrow Road future.

“For Delia and Michael to pick the phone up at this moment meant a lot to me,” he said. “To have this conversation, to have this longer chat, to hear their opinion why we are in a situation where we are. It’s not about only them saying, ‘David, we back you, we believe in you’.

 

“To be so clear, so smart and intelligent, it’s just great to have owners like this. And owners who care about the club and are able to see the big picture. But, again, we need results. This is for sure as well. It’s still a result driven business.

“This is where we live, and this is obviously what we are all together desperate to produce. But it was a very good conversation.”

Wagner is convinced he has the support to drag the Canaries out of the Championship mire.

“To hear from Delia and Michael in this way, for the first time, and hear them say what I already knew in terms of how they back me was great to hear,” he said. “I’ve known from conversations with other people that I have the fully support of the owners and the board.

“This is how it should be if you own a football club; that you see the reasons why situations can happen, situations we like to solve and situations we are desperate to change. And this was quite good to hear, even if I felt that the whole time.”
